 About Us

The overall aim of St Brigid’s College as a Catholic Co-educational Secondary School, is to help our pupils to acquire the knowledge and skills to enable them to develop into responsible members of their family, their church and their community.  The school motto ‘Fide et Fidelitate’ embodies the Catholic ethos of St Brigid’s – through our Faith and through our faithfulness.  Since October 2000 the former Meanscoil Dhoire has been amalgamated into St Brigid’s College. The main school serves the Greater Shantallow area which comprises the four parishes of Our Lady of Lourdes, Steelstown, St Brigid’s Carnhill; St Josephs Galliagh, and St Patrick’s Pennyburn.Since 2007 the last three parishes have been amalgamated into ' the Parish of the Three Patrons.'

The main school site was substantially extended and refurbished at a cost of £7.7 million. The official opening of the new building was celebrated on the feast of St Brigid 1st February 2005.

Through a planned reduction in intake, to allow for expansion of our Sixth Form, the school caters for 792 pupils in the 11-18 age range: 324 girls and 468 boys. The school has a full time teaching staff of 58 teachers.  There are 5 secretarial staff, 4 technicians, 1 librarian, and 16 classroom assistants.  Our Principal is Miss Marianna Doherty.   Mr Liam Gallagher (Vice-Principal) has responsibility for Pastoral Care.  Mr George Chambers (Vice-Principal) is responsible for Curriculum throughout the school.

St Brigid’s sees its role as complementing the activities of parents and church in the formation of pupils in leading full Christian lives.  The development of healthy spiritual attitudes is regarded as of paramount importance.  The concept of inclusiveness is recognised as crucial and the school welcomes all pupils regardless of background or ability, including the physically disabled, for whom access facilities have been provided in the form of a lift and ramps to make all areas accessible.

Under the direction of Mr Chambers, the school is fully involved in the training of staff for the implementation of the Revised Curriculum and departments are already committed to this programme, to continue the school's provision of a broad and balanced curriculum for all its pupils.

The school offers pupils the opportunity to participate in a wide range of sports.  Many successes have been achieved over the years in both boys’ and girls’ competitions, the most notable of which was the winning of the NI schools Under 15 Blue Riband Soccer Trophy, the only Secondary School in the Northwest to have done so.

The ICT provision at the school has been considerably improved. All class rooms have ICT facilities. We have 4 suites operating on the Legacy network.  In addition to this ICT and e-learning has been considerably improved with the recent C2k Programme, with two fully fitted C2K suites the most recent of which has been added in October 2005. The school joined the Microsoft Academy Programme in 2007.

Following the completion of the building programme, we now have a school of which everyone can be proud  and which will bring educational benefits to the pupils who will attend St Brigid’s College in the years to come.
